Check the basic requirements
SSA generally requires an adult applicant to be unable to engage in substantial gainful activity because of a medically determinable impairment that has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 continuous months, or is expected to result in death. Social Security Disability Insurance also requires enough work covered by Social Security. A screening can help organize these questions, but SSA makes the eligibility decision.
Gather information before starting
Collect the names and contact information for doctors, clinics and hospitals; treatment dates; medicines; test results; and details about the jobs you held. SSA’s Adult Disability Starter Kit includes a checklist and worksheet designed for this preparation. Having consistent dates and complete provider information can reduce avoidable follow-up.
Choose how to apply
You may apply through SSA’s online disability application, by calling 1-800-772-1213, or through a local Social Security office. The online application can be saved and resumed. Apply through SSA itself; this website’s questionnaire is an initial screening and does not submit a government application.
Keep a complete record
Save the confirmation, a copy of what you submitted, provider details and any later correspondence. Answer requests from SSA or your state Disability Determination Services promptly, and report material changes in work or contact information.
